Huli Wigmen - Papua New Guinea
Sep 05, 2010
March 2006 The PNG Huli men are said to be the fiercest warriors in the world. But they have a surprising soft side -- an obsession with hair. Boys spend years constructing elaborate wigs. "It is very important for a young Huli boy to have a wig. That's why the boys go to wig school", explains Huli Harold Hayake. To grow strong, healthy hair, the young men live together in a monastic lifestyle under the guidance of a wig master. Only after their wig is ready can they marry. Resource Rage - Papua New Guinea
Aug 27, 2010
The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea has made a $16bn deal to extract the country's natural gas. His people have responded with violent protests, which could plunge the troubled nation back into chaos. "It's just like raping a woman. They're going to rape our resources." The landowners living along the length of the proposed pipeline have been promised huge benefits from the plan to extract gas from the Southern Highlands and export it to Asia. But they don't believe it and are up in arms: in scenes of chaos fuelled by a legacy of watching promised riches pass them by, they cut down power-lines, wielding guns and blocking roads: "You never listen - I'll chop you people". Ironically, most of the people living in the resource-rich Southern Highlands, live without power, without hospitals and without education. The MD of Australian 'Oil-Search'- which has a 29% stake in the project - agreed that the money the government has received in the past, "have not been seen in resource areas". Project Operator Exxon Mobil refused to comment. But the Governor of Gulf Province says he'll sue Exxon for over $2 billion for what he alleges are failings in their environmental impact study. With four dead, the former commander of the PNG Defence Force has confessed to fears that, "we are setting the stage for another Bougainville crisis in the Southern Highlands".
Guinea worm
Aug 27, 2010
Dracunculiasis, more commonly known as Guinea worm disease (GWD), is an infection caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis. The parasite is alternately known in English as "Guinea worm", "Medina worm", and finally "fiery serpent" which reflects the Latin root word Dracunculus meaning "little dragon".
A force for democracy in Guinea
Aug 25, 2010
As Guinea prepares for its first presidential election since independence from France more than half a century ago, the West African nation's security forces are being called on to hep democracy rather than supress it. Dadis Camara, an army captain, seized power following the death of Lansana Conte, the country's president, in December 2008. Less than a year later his troops crushed an opposition rally, killing more than 150 civilians. But now a 16000-strong gendarmerie and police force has been formed to supervise the elections that it is hoped will lead to a stable civilian government. Guinea Pigs - a Cute Little Pet Living a Lie
True or false: Guinea pigs are small, hybrid animals that have been cultivated and cross-bred from wild pigs originally captured on the island of New Guinea The fact that this animal was originally cross-bred in the laboratory to establish a pig breed that was both of friendly disposition and small enough to keep as a house pet, is the reason that the guinea pig still remains associated with labs in most of our minds today
